Open
Access / Elevator Project
In
2003 research began into the possibilities of access for all at
Kingsway-Lambton. The plan would include elevator and lift access,
handicap washrooms, a ramp, and an inviting, light-filled entryway.
The necessary fund-raising to see this vision into reality began
in 2004. In all, over $1,500,000 was raised for this project. In
our wisdom, several other improvements were undertaken while the
project was underway rather than attempt add-ons at a later date.
The project was completed in 2006 and dedicated in September of
that year. The cost of the finished project was about $1,800,000
resulting in a debt of about $300,000. Through
the generosity of the UCW, the Outreach Committee, the Men’s
Group, additional donations, and bequests that debt has now been
retired. There remain just a few outstanding pledges which, when
paid, will allow a fund for the continued maintenance of the elevator
and lift.
The new accessible
entrance provides members, adherents and the community with:
- A full service
elevator that comfortably accommodates five people along with
someone in a wheelchair.
- A lift device
that can accommodate someone in a wheelchair accompanied by an
attendant.
- Bright,
easy access at ground level through the West Entrance Lobby.
- New fully
accessible men's and women's washrooms in the lower level.
- New fully
accessible washroom near the West Reception Room.
- An altered
staircase to the lower level with a gentler slope and fewer steps.
Benefits of
the new entrance include open access:

Study for Meetings, Consultation, Counselling.

enlarged, ground level lobby through the West Entrance.
- To Community
and Public events, Speaker nights, Social activities.
- To updated,
enlarged Washrooms in the lower level and a new accessible Washroom
on the upper level.
- For use
as a transport device between levels for AudioVisual Equipment,
Office Equipment, Flea Market donations, Coat Racks.
- To provide
substantially more storage for Church Equipment and Flea Market
donations.
