Sunday School KidsOur Vision

That Sunday School for each child and youth would be a place for ...loving, nurturing relationships that reflect God's love, and that it would be a safe place to explore, question and nurture faith

A Bit of our Sunday School History

Our Sunday School began in 1860, when we were Lambton Methodist.

By 1934, the numbers in Sunday School were so great that space had to be rented at the local public school at a cost of $1 per day.

February, 28, 1937 marked the grand opening of Kingsway-Lambton United Church. By May of 1942, the Sunday School wing was completed. Previously the Sunday School classes had been held in the kitchen and furnace room.

In 1947, the Sunday School had reached and surpassed the one thousand mark.

How Sunday School Works

Church Sunday School and Nursery Care are offered during the 10:00 a.m. service of Worship and are located on all three levels of the church building. Sunday School classes range from Beginners to Grade 8, along with Pre-Confirmation (Grade 9) and Confirmation (Grade 10).

Each week a team of dedicated volunteers provides Christian Educational Programming for children and youth, ranging from birth to Grade 10.

What a Typical Sunday Looks Like

September through May

Families usually arrive between 9:45 a.m. and 9:55 a.m.

For children ages birth to 2, some parents choose to take them directly to Nursery Care, while others might take them to Worship first and then Nursery Care later. It is left up to the discretion of the parents.

Children in Beginners are taken to their classroom.

Children in Kindergarten are taken to their classroom, and when all have gathered, they are led up to the Sanctuary by the Kindergarten teacher for the first 20 minutes of Worship.

All other families (with children/youth in Grades 1-8) head to the sanctuary where they worship together for the first 20 minutes. After the "sharing time'" with the children, all Sunday School students head to their classrooms.

And then there are the exceptions ...

Holiday Weekends

During holiday weekends, or when two services of worship are offered, a 'One-room Sunday School'' is held:

Summer Sunday School

During the months of June, July and August, we offer a One-Room Summer Sunday School. It is offered to children ages 3 to 12. Nursery Care is also provided and is for ages birth to 2. If you are able to volunteer your time for any of these summer weekends, please contact the Church Office. On behalf of the children you will teach — Thank you!

Regular Sunday School

Regular Church Sunday School and Nursery Care are offered during the 10:00 am Worship service. Nursery Care is located on the Lower Level. Our regular Sunday School classes range from Beginners to Grade 8, along with Pre-Confirmation (Grade 9) and Confirmation (Grade 10). New Students are always welcome! For more information about our Sunday School, or to register, contact the Church Office.

Safety

Please note the following safety procedures practiced within our Sunday School and Church.

  • If you have children in Beginners to Grade 4, we ask that you pick them up from their classroom and then head to coffee hour. Please note that once your child has been picked up they are no longer the responsibility of the Sunday school teacher.
  • Each teacher is required to complete a Volunteer Application Package, which includes a Police Check.
  • The cookies served at Coffee Hour, and during selected class times, are nut-free.
  • Each Fall our entire church family participates in a Fire-Drill to ensure that in the event of a fire, all 100 children (infants to teens) would be safely led from the church building.

Our Sunday School Curriculum

Witness Curriculum (Beginners to Grade 6)

The "Witness" curriculum is based on Bible Stories. Students learn the stories of the Bible in chronological order, beginning with Genesis and concluding with the death and resurrection of Jesus. Each week a different Bible Story is read. Each of the lessons engages the students to learn and live the stories, so that they may find relevant connections to their daily lives. The curriculum includes take-home worksheets for each student, along with lively music, posters and games.

Curriculum (Grades 7 and 8, Pre-Confirmation and Confirmation)

The curriculum being utilized was uniquely designed, so as to provide an engaging exploration of all aspects of the Christian Faith (Bible, Triune God, Stewardship, Worship, Church, Outreach and service), as well as personal beliefs, hands-on Christian service and spiritual enrichment. A variety of learning styles are including: discussion format, group work, journal writing, music, art and games.

Special Sunday School Projects

  • Children's Sunday Service in November and June.
  • Advent Celebrations are held in December: Advent Readers and Candle Lighters, White Gift Parade; an offering of Gently-Loved Toys, Mitten/Hat/Sock Tree, Christmas Pageant.
  • Celebration of our Sunday School Ministry: Sunday School Party, Sunday School Learning Goal, Sunday School Open House (Month of February), weekly Scripture Readers.

Family Worship Time

Family Worship occurs during the first 20 minutes of the 10:00 a.m. service. This time together allows the entire congregation to worship as one "Family of Christ", and for the young people to play an active role in our morning Worship service:

  • Participating in the Children's Story on the steps of the Chancel
  • Assisting with the call to Worship during the seasons of Advent and Lent
  • Pouring of the water into the Baptismal Font during Baptisms
  • Reading Scripture during Sunday School Month (February)
  • Laying of the Wreath during the Remembrance Day Service

To Supplement your child's Christian development, Kingsway-Lambton United Church also offers ...

Worship Choir

The Children's Worship Choir is led by our Director of Young People's Music, Sharon Burlacoff , with rehearsals held every Thursday from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. in the West Reception Room.  Rehearsals incorporate vocal warm-ups, interactive singing games, Christian worship repertoire from a variety of countries/cultures/eras, drums as well as other instruments and sharing time for all choristers.  This choir is open to all children (KLUC family and community) aged 7 - 13. More experienced singers will have leadership and mentoring opportunities.  For more information contact Sharon via the Church office.

Christmas Pageant

Each year, Kingsway-Lambton is proud to present its Christmas Pageant   to the Community. This year marks the 73rd year of the pageant and will run November 30 through December 3. Rehearsals begin in October. If you would like to be a part of the pageant, either behind the scenes, or center-stage, please contact the Church Office. Tickets will be available on a first-come basis near the end of November.

Contemporary Worship

This service is open to all ages and is held in the Chapel.  Come join us for lively music, engaging messages and discussion!  It's pretty casual so don't worry about not knowing what "contemporary" means.

The Library

Our Church Library is open to all and is located in the East Corridor. It has a wonderfully diverse collection of books for children of all ages from picture story books to books for young readers. Please feel free to visit it when the church is open and books may be signed out.
