is the UCW?
The UCW is
an organization which provides Christian fellowship, friendship
and mutual support for women in the United Church. Through the work
of the UCW, the women in our Church support each other
and our community.
How We Are Organized
We have six groups, or units, within our UCW. Each unit organizes their own meetings and programs, which may include social events, guest speakers on a variety of subjects,
Bible or other study, crafts, etc.
Units generally meet monthly.
We are mostly senior women, who meet 10 times a year for fellowship, friendship, tea, and the sharing of our faith. We have a Christmas luncheon and a June outing.
Our meetings include a time of devotion, UCW updates, activities and information, and a program - occasionally shared with another unit.
Funds are raised through individual donations and an occasional sponsorship type of activity. We assist at the UCW Christmas luncheon and bake and pour tea whenever requested.
We have good representation at all UCW functions and many members are active in other committees and activities in the church.
We are women juggling careers, volunteering and families in the "sandwich generation." We meet one evening in most months Sept - June, often away from the church,
to celebrate, share our joys and challenges, and build one another up in love.
We share leadership of the June Dinner, alternating duties each year with Unit 7;
we prepare and host the "Souper Bowl" Turkey Soup Lunch for the congregation after church on Superbowl Sunday (late January or early February.)
"Granny Support Groups" with guest speaker Carolyn Nixon
Tuesday, May 20th at 7:30 p.m. in the Club Room.
For the past eight winters, Carolyn Nixon, retired Toronto Physical Education teacher, has travelled to the Valley of 1,000 Hills, South Africa, to work with the 'Gogos' (Zulu for “Grandmother”) and the children they are now raising, due to the devastating effects of AIDS. Working in the remote, rural areas with her soul sister, Zulu nurse Cwengi Myeni, Carolyn has helped to create Granny Support Groups to assist the women to become more self-sufficient and empowered. To celebrate their successes, Cwengi and Carolyn created a wonderful event called the “Gogolympics.”
A charitable donation in support of the women of South Africa is respectfully requested.
Everyone is welcome to join our group for fellowship, fun, and service.
Gathering as a Whole
We gather as the women of Kingsway-Lambton at least twice a year, for our Christmas Luncheon and the June Dinner. All women are welcome.
General Interest Events
We host open events from time to time, including speaker presentations and fundraisers, open to other UCW units, all women, or both women and men.
(please see Flea Market below.)
Our governing body has representatives from each unit, and makes decisions on behalf of the whole UCW. Council meets once a month.
How You can get involved in the UCW at Kingsway-Lambton
- Join a unit.
We encourage you to join a unit. It is a wonderful way to meet
and have the support and fellowship of other Christian women.
Even if you do not have a lot of time, participate as much as you are able. Try us out. Go to
different unit meetings and see what fits you best.

to help with events. This is the time we laugh together and have the
- Attend our
annual Spring dinner (early June) or our Christmas luncheon (late
November, early December)
- Some of our members participate in regional or national UCW events in the United Church of Canada at the Presbyterial level.
Funeral Reception Catering
Unit 2 leads Funeral catering, supporting bereaved families with cost-effective catering for church funerals. The receptions provide an elegant setting, with many delicious sandwiches and squares, in which the memory of loved ones may be shared.
The Flea Market
The UCW oversees the Flea Market every year. We draw upon hundreds of volunteers
from within or outside of our congregation, with many men, women and children involved throughout Flea Market Week.
