This year we have started something new – an early morning Sunday service that has a modern, informal style. Doors open at 8:10, with coffee and snacks in the sanctuary to help you start your day. We begin at 8:30, and end at 9:15, with lots of time for coffee and conversation afterwards.
The service is popular among early risers, including parents with small children, and parents with teenagers, who are at home sleeping in. We also have people who just like the idea of having church finished early in the day. We have child care in our nursery down stairs for the little ones.
The music is provided by Dan Ryan and his band, and leans towards a more contemporary sound, with piano, synthesizer and percussion. We sing to old favourites and more modern hymns. (To get a taste of the music see the video below, our tribute to the passing of Aretha Franklin).
The service is designed to be more interactive than traditional services. Ministers give shorter sermons, with time for a brief discussion with congregants during the service. Afterwards, ministers are available for a q and a session, over coffee and snacks. Our presiding ministers are Stephen Milton and Rev. Leanne Ketcham. Stephen is a former documentary film maker, so he likes to use videos in the services, and in social media in between Sundays to keep in touch. Leanne is our church’s children and family minister, as well as a Ph.D. student in theology. Together, they bring a fresh perspective to their spirituality, relating ancient wisdom to our modern lives. The service also has frequent guest preachers, drawn from the Kingsway-Lambton United Church family of ministers. If you’d like to get a taste of the service, please check out our videos here, and on our Kingsway-Lambton United Church YouTube channel. You can also receive regular updates from us on our Facebook page ( freshstartsundays) and our Instagram (@freshstart.kluc) We hope you’ll come by and see us some Sunday soon.
The Fresh Start service is made possible thanks to funds supplied by Kingsway-Lambton United Church and a grant from the United Church of Canada.
