Hebrews 13:2 “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.”

Hello Kingsway-Lambton Friends and Happy Easter!

As you may know by now, Kingsway-Lambton’s community Outreach efforts support seven local agencies*, all of which do amazing work in our community. Your donations make this happen. Today, I want to shine the spotlight on the Out of the Cold Program that feeds 100 people every winter Friday night right here in our neighbourhood. This program began almost 40 years ago, intended to be a temporary winter stopgap for shelter and hunger.

Kingsway-Lambton hosts two Friday dinners over the winter, the same menu each time (we are good at it!). Here’s how it unfolds. Cue the music, “Flight of the Bumblebee”. Thursday night: bake three large pans of bread pudding.  Friday  morning: peel 50 lbs potatoes, slice 10 lbs onions, prep 5 eye-of-round roasts, cook all the above. Friday afternoon: carve roast beef 40 slices per roast, mash 50 lbs potatoes, cook peas and carrots, wipe sweat off brow, clean KL kitchen, drive food to at All Saints Anglican. Friday evening: toss 3 giant bowls of coleslaw, heat 8L gravy, prep vegetarian chili, say grace, dish soup, plate 100 meals of roast beef with gravy and mashed potatoes with side of veg and coleslaw, bread pudding with ice cream, drive leftovers to Elisa House Women’s Shelter. Done. Over 30 Kingsway-Lambton volunteers make this happen over our two Fridays. Your donations pay for these meals at a cost of $5.72/meal.

But Kingsway-Lambton’s food is just one piece of a larger effort. The Out of the Cold program operates with a team of 10+ regular volunteers who are at All Saints EVERY Friday night, after their day jobs, running the show. They know the guests, they ensure wellness and safety, they guide the servers, they make soup, they scrape plates. They organize dental services, haircuts, an art station, instrumentalists, and a table of warm clothing. They are kind and caring. They make the program human. Your donations also support this part of the program.

I hope you agree this is money well spent. On that note, please consider donating to Kingsway-Lambton’s Easter  Outreach campaign.

Happy Easter,

Sandra Linsdell (On behalf of the Outreach Team)
